Queen Tamar, often called Tamar the Great, ruled Georgia from 1184 to 1213 and is remembered as one of the most powerful and beloved leaders in Georgian history. Her reign is known as Georgia’s Golden Age, a time when the kingdom reached its peak in culture, art, literature, and military strength. Under Tamar, Georgia expanded its territories, strengthened its Christian identity, and became one of the most influential states of the region. She supported artists, poets, and scholars — including Shota Rustaveli, author of The Man in the Panther’s Skin. Though called “King Tamar” (Tamar Mepe) to honor her authority, she remains a symbol of wisdom, strength, and unity — a timeless figure who shaped the soul of the Georgian nation.
